ON MY DESK - William Morris
The objects that inspire and motivate
Who: William Morris
Position: Founder, The Morris Law Group.
"I love it," he says of his work space. Morris celebrated his 50th year called to the bar last month. "It's so seldom," he says. These are some items he picked up over the decades.
1. At a party several years ago, Morris put aside his views on bikes and got on one for a picture. "I never liked motorcycles. Too many nice people get hurt," he explains. He wanted to get rid of the picture but just can't bring himself to toss it out.
2. Morris smoked cigars for more than 40 years until his doctor told him he had to stop. "It was a good move," he says, and he hasn't had one in several years. He thinks about this Mark Twain quote and laughs every time.
3. A certificate of congratulations signed by Stephen Harper for Morris's 50th anniversary on June 26. "It was superb. They (family and friends) totally surprised me with a bursary plan at McMaster University." More than $60,000 will be offered to students to further their education. "It was a humbling experience. And I don't get humbled too often."
4. Morris says he has always been known as eccentric. This larger-than-life boot was a gift from friends and serves as a replica. "I used to wear boots like this. I'm still eccentric."
5. A commemorative ring of the Toronto Blue Jays' World Series victories in 1992-93. He has always been a season ticket-holder. It represents many great memories at the games with family and friends.
6. Morris says this photo with his grandson, Jacob, is the most important thing in his office. "He's one of my pride and joys," along with his newborn grandson, Samuel.
7. The Emilius Irving Award recognizes long standing commitment and excellence in legal practice. Morris was given this in 2006. "It's very meaningful," he says.
8. The Martindale-Hubbell Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers for 2009. Morris was listed as one of only three from Ontario. "It's nice to be recognized by your peers."
