Catastrophically injured at risk - Recent changes related to vehicle insurance coverage fail those who need the most help
11 Aug 2011
On June 19th, an article was published by the Toronto Sun identifying some changes that were recently made to car insurance coverage. There are three categories a person may fall into when injured in a car accident, minor injuries paying up to $3,500, non-minor injuries paying up to $50,000, and catastrophic impairment paying up to $1 million. Those who are injured in a motor vehicle accident have a harder time qualifying for a catastrophic impairment, which results in an exhaustion of benefits for survivors so that they are unable to receive the medical rehabilitation services they need.
The Financial Services Commission of Ontario (FSCO) is in charge of regulating car insurance in Ontario and has been asked to review the definition of a catastrophic impairment. The result will make it more complex and harder for those survivors.
The insurance companies and survivors of car accidents disagree on the extent of injury. In these types of situations, the injured person should seek legal representation from a personal injury law firm, like The Morris Law Group who has been practicing personally injury law for over 50 years. These Hamilton personal injury lawyers have dealt with many complex motor vehicle accident cases.
